I recently had my first baby.
During my stay in the hospital we had a very difficult time breastfeeding. My
son did not seem interested in the breast nor did he latch on. After much persistence
I was able to latch him on one time successfully before leaving the hospital.
Although, I had gotten him to latch on I knew he was not on correctly. I quickly
got blisters, which turned into cracks and severely damaged nipples. In desperation
I called my local La Leche League for help. They referred me to a lactation specialist
when they could not help me. I ended up finger feeding my baby with an S & S for
a week and a half in order to allow time for me to heal. I pumped during this
time in order to keep up my milk supply and in order to feed my baby my milk.
My baby is one month old tomorrow and I am now breastfeeding my baby almost all
of the time except for a couple bottles at night. It was one of the biggest challenges
I have ever had to overcome, not to mention painful. But, I did it and am glad
I stuck to it. We still have a ways to go for perfection, but in time, I am told
it will become easier.
