Putting Shane in the slingLegs folded in kangaroo carry

Putting the baby in the kangaroo carry. Getting the legs folded just right is the key.

the kangaroo carryside view of kangaroo carry

The kangaroo carry. We use this hold a lot, and Shane's earned the nickname "Baby Roo" because he looks like a baby kangaroo peeking out of its pouch!

the cradle hold

The cradle hold - great for nursing! You can also easily switch to this position when baby falls asleep in other positions. If Shane falls asleep in the car, when I pick him up I just put him in the sling in this position - he's slept through many shopping trips this way!

sitting sideways

Sitting sideways. Baby's legs are folded similar to kangaroo carry. This is the same hold we're using in the picture at the top of the main sling page.

the hip carry

The hip carry. This is better for toddlers and older babies who have more back strength. Shane hasn't quite mastered that yet, which is why I have the fabric pulled all the way up to his neck. :-)

The back carryThe back carry

The back carry. To put the baby on this way, start with the rings a little farther back, either on or just behind your shoulder. Then put the baby in the hip carry and shift him backwards, which will bring the rings forwards a bit, right where they belong. (Do as I say, not as I do - the rings are a bit low in this picture!)

There are many more ways to carry a baby in a sling. I've found that an important part is getting the baby securely in the sling so it "feels right" - take them out and try again if you need to until you get it right, and they'll probably ride in it happily until you're ready to take them out! Don't be afraid to experiment with it and you'll probably come up with your own favorite positions. Happy babywearing!

Adorable Caeleb pic! This is 1-year-old Caeleb, proving that slings aren't just for Mamas and Daddies! :-) Another adorable Caeleb pic!
