Dorothy's Story

When I decided to breastfeed, it was mainly for financial reasons. I did learn about the many other benefits and advantages until later. My family frowned upon my decision, because they feel uncomfortable. Anyway, I am now nursing my fourth child and am saddened to realize that now that I have it all together, this will be the last time for me.

First of all, I have learned to pump in order to avoid discomfort and mastits. I was told by health professionals and friends not to do this because I would increase my milk supply and create an endless cycle of pumping to keep up. Well, that is not so. I began pumping when Stephen (my fourth) was 3 days old. I pumped at least 12 oz each day anticipating my early return to work (in two weeks). Now I am pumping 8 oz when I get home and am doing great! Our bodies were designed so wonderfully!

The second myth that I would like to dispel is that you must pump at work. I actually know women who did not nurse because they did not know what they would do when they went back to work. I teach elementary school and only get a 20 minute break for lunch. I never tried to pump because I knew I wouldn't have the time or privacy. My body quickly adjusted to my time schedule. I don't even experience "let-down" while at work, but at 3:00 I'm looking for Stephen and my breastpump.
