My name is Allison and I am
the 16 year old mother of a beautiful 6 month old son named Cade Mackenzie. When
he was born he inhaled amniotic fluid and was unable to nurse at birth. I was
breastfed, as were both my parents, so for me, bottle feeding was never an option.
Cade and I were forced to be separated for 4 days, while he remained on oxygen.
I began pumping colostrum for him to drink when he was able. I was so afraid he
would become confused (I've learned any baby books not written by the Sears' tend
to frighten me!) but I wanted him to have the extra benefits of the colostrum
he had missed out on. When Cade was 3 days old he received his first bottle, and
drank it greedily! At 4 days he had one more bottle but i couldn't take it any
more! My nipple belonged in his mouth, not a latex imitation! My mother, grand-mother
and nurse all reasured me. No matter what the books say, he will nurse, it may
hurt, but the pain will stop and you and you son will be better of because of
it. So with no fear, i put my new son to the breast , in the hospital nursery's
rocking chair. Cade came home that night, 3 days earlier than expected, since he
had no trouble nursing and made a complete turn-around right after. The doctor
and nurses were shocked he nursed so well. But i wasn't. I knew what my son needed.
Me.
